I’m James Birbeck, an Edinburgh furniture maker designing and building bespoke furniture, cabinetry and homewares from my workshop in Newbattle.
At Birbeck Furniture, thoughtful design, honest materials and lasting craftsmanship are at the heart of everything I make. I believe furniture should be made to be lived with—used every day, enjoyed for generations, and valued for both its purpose and its simplicity.
Combining traditional joinery with modern production methods allows me to create pieces that are quietly functional, carefully considered and built to last. Respect for materials guides every stage of the process, from selecting quality timber and minimising waste to refining each piece with care and attention to detail.
That same approach inspired the Remnants Collection , where carefully selected offcuts are transformed into beautifully crafted homewares. It’s a way of celebrating the character of the material while ensuring that as little as possible goes to waste.
